This short story was written in response to “What Do You See”
“Mary I’ll be back shortly, I just want to go and see what all the hullabaloo is about,” said Sam.
“Oh, okay I guess, it’s probably nothing but you go ahead and do what you have to do, just make sure you’re home for supper.”
Sam had heard from his buddies at the factory that there was a world beyond the wall that had been tagged The Beginning Is Near. It was said that if you dare to climb the ladder all the way to the top and stand on the edge of the wall, you’ll end up somewhere else.
Sam didn’t fully believe this story that they were weaving but his curiosity got the best of him and up the ladder, he climbed almost making it to the top. He couldn’t quite get up the gumption to stand on the very top bricks though.
Gazing over the wall Sam saw the most beautiful and inviting place he’d ever seen before. It had lush forests, the greenest meadows anyone could imagine with twinkling stars all about. The sky was full of gorgeous blue colours that were shimmering. There were hot springs and people, happy people milling around having conversations. A far cry from where he and Mary lived amongst the poor, sick and miserable people who were always complaining about their surroundings.
Oops, looking at his watch Sam realized that it was getting late and Mary was going to be mad.
“Where the hell have you been? Supper’s gone stone cold now.”
“Mary, get your coat on, I have to show you something.”
“For pete’s sake Sam what is so important that it can’t wait until tomorrow?”
“I’m afraid it could be gone by then, you must come now as it’s what Heaven I imagine would look like.”
Mary threw on her coat and off they went to the wall.
“Climb up that ladder to the top rung, and look over the wall.”
Mary couldn’t believe she was doing this but Sam was so adamant about it.
“Oh my, Mary said. I cannot believe what I’m seeing. Sam, we have to go over there right now, before it disappears.”
Sam knew that Mary would fall in love with The New Beginning and that she’d want to go over.
Sam then climbed the ladder and they both stood on the wall.
They were never seen again.
