This was written for Six Sentence Story over at Denise’s.
Liberty, an Irish Setter, was a beautiful, well behaved, dog that my mom and dad had rescued back in the late ’70s.
She was funny as when we’d go for car rides, she wouldn’t do her business anywhere other than in our backyard. It didn’t matter if she was away from the house for six hours, she’d hold until she got home.
One day I was watching her in the backyard playing catch and release with a frog that came to visit.
She’d catch the frog, hold it in her mouth for a few seconds, then let it go and then run and catch it again, and again.
Liberty was one of the gentlest dogs I’ve ever known.

Thank you for sharing such a sweet memory. Irish setters are such beautiful dogs. I think that this dog and this frog should be characters in a children’s book. 🙂

Did she also do the ‘come on, lets keep playing!’ nudge with her nose when the frog got tired?
Ola used to do something similar.

Susan, this brings back so many memories of the first dog my husband and I had Toby.
He too played catch and release…..bunnies, birds but with his soft mouth most of them actually survived. Made me smile.

Loving a dog is a great thing, losing one is horrid. We are dogless now and I’m ok with that because I am not ready for another heartbreak.

We are dogless too at the moment. Lost our second Newfoundlander a little over a year ago and to be honest with you, I don’t think I’m quite over her death yet. I may never be.
